Siccest of the fittest

July 11, 2010

The Black & Red 2010 crew!

1st place male Blaine Springston of Crossfit Centex and 1st place female Mariah Macdonald of SICFIT Austin pose for a pic with Big Mike.

SICFIT Austin would like to thank all of the athletes, spectators and volunteers who came out on Saturday to witness the first ever Black & Red Competition! The event was exciting and fast-paced – everything we look for in a SICFIT Austin competition. Thanks to everyone for making this day a huge success!

With temperatures high and humidity thick, 10 men and 4 women came out to test their best and put their training into practice…

The first event was deadlifts for max repetitions in 90 seconds: “The Quick and the Deadlift”. The men chose between 225, 305 and 385, with each rep counting for 1, 3 or 6 points, respectively. The women chose between 135, 175 and 215 with the same point system. Mariah Macdonald got out to an early lead, completing 20 reps at 215# to give her 120 points. On the men’s side, Robert Brown completed 26 reps at 305#, to give him first place in the first event with a total of 78 points.

The second event was a demanding metcon in “Grace Got SIC”: 10 ground to overhead anyway (135#,95#), 3x around the building dual kettlebell farmer’s walk (24kg/16kg), 10 ground to overhead anyway, sandbag carry 3x around building (dual for the men, single for the women), followed by 10 ground to overhead anyway. Top time for the men in the second workout was put up by Blaine Springston at 6:02 (Blaine would go on to place first overall), while the top time for the women was a blazing 6:00 claimed by Emily Baker.

In dramatic fashion, Emily Baker and Mariah Macdonald tied for 1st place, requiring a tiebreaker to determine the winner. The tiebreaker was 3 rounds of: 5 pullups, 5 burpees. First to finish wins. Emily pulled out to an early lead but could not complete her last set of pullups unbroken, and Mariah caught her on the home stretch to pulloff the win.

The winners both took home classic SICFIT t-shirts, and complimentary top AND bottom provided by lululemon athletica! Nice digs!

Once again, we would like to thank everyone for coming out to support our new and growing community. This Saturday truly encapsulated what is means to be SICFIT.
